J W Goethe, 'The Sorrows of Young Werther' (Die Leiden des jungen Werthers), translated by R D Boylan.
First published 1774.
I've added pictures, a short TOC and reformatted a bit.
The highly-strung young Werther goes to visit the countryside and meets young Charlotte, who is cutting bread and butter for her younger siblings. A desparate passion ensues because she is engaged to another..
This is an epistolary novel and I've always wondered why the friend, to whom Werther was writing, didn't do something to stop the tragic ending.
This Sturm und Drang novel was responsible for changes in fashion - clothes were made in the Werther style. It was also allegedly responsible for hundreds of copy-cat suicides.
