It functions well, but if sorted by date, all the books are scattered among the library, and I don't want to scroll among 17K ebooks,

MAy be I did'nt understand something in your purpose.

I've tried this with the highlight functionality on. It's faaaaaaaaaar better when the search appears in a separate window ....

It's a good way to do what I want.

But, if, in the future of Calibre 1.x, it could be possible for a sorting order to be memorized, I think I would'nt be the only one to appreciate (Kovid ??? .
