Ronald Firbank: The Flower Beneath the Foot: Being a Record of the Early Life of St. Laura De Nazianzi and the Times in Which She Lived.
(1923)
A good-humoured blend of decadence, eroticism and satire. This study of snobbery in a minor royal court serves to illustrate the absurdity of most [all?] human behaviour.
It also contains some memorable dialogue, e.g.:
“Ah my dear, I never could resist a
mon!” Mrs Bedley exclaimed.
Mrs Montgomery sighed.
“Once,” she murmured meditatively, “men (those procurers of delights) engaged me utterly. ... I was their
slave. . . .
Now. . . . One does not burn one’s fingers twice, Mrs Bedley.”
