The Baen Free Library has been around for a long time and moreover you can find copies of the Baen CD's (currently 9, with #10 to come soon in Hell Hath No Fury, 3/07) freely and legally on the Net and they have many more books than in the free library.

What is significant is that 1812 is a Del Rey book, and while Baen sold or had in the library some Tor e-books, this is a big step forward.

Now if the upstairs bosses at the parent companies of Tor, Del Rey and others would agree to do drm free e-books, and for example in the case of Tor restart the e-book deal with Baen/Webscriptions that died so ignomiously last spring after only several weeks, that would be a really big step forward for drm-free ebooks.
