Shorter than a chapter of
Tom Sawyer, 1601 has been published many times over the years as a stand alone book. (I have a large format version complete with copyrighted illustrations.)
The Introduction and history of the book is far longer than the book itself. The footnotes are also longer than the book itself. Here are all the pieces as collected by Project Gutenberg.
If you have never read it (or even heard of it),
1601 is set in the Court of Queen Elizabeth I and follows the events when a "great wind" is loosed on all present. Each person there answers in turn in the style of their character and with words in the style of certain other writers. It is a great and quick read. A triffling so to speak.
Enjoy.
