You can get around registering a Nook Simple Touch (BNRV350) when you first boot it.
The battery is also easy to replace.
And while an OS update on my desktop meant I can't mount the Nook as a volume anymore, I can still pop the micro SD card out and load books on it.
I don't want to sound like an unapologetic advocate for old Nooks. The fact that mine won't display Japanese is the reason I registered on this forum. That is my only complaint about it, though.
