Update: I bought a Kindle 4 with a broken screen, tore both it and my original apart, and swapped the motherboards. I now have a working Kindle.
I made a sticky paper the exact dimensions of the faceplate, which I stuck over the black bezel to make it feel like a book margin and a larger page. I have also so far kept the magnetic plugs out of it, from an abundance of caution.
It works almost perfectly, though today I seem to be having trouble getting it to connect over USB Mass Storage. No issues via USBNetwork SSH, but I can't transfer Calibre books easily that way. Not sure if Renametoabin may have messed something up.
