Never mind, got it working. I've created a patch now which updates
adds/kbmenu/onstart/start_plato.sh by adding the line

mount -o remount,rw /mnt/sd
before starting Plato.
Download the attached patch if you want to do the same. Simply extract
KoboRoot.tgz from the zip file, copy it into
.kobo, and install it by clicking on
handle update on KSM home screen.
