Device: onyx boox max carta
The thread is old but the topic still very actual.

DO NOT BUY THE SONY DPT-RP1 !!!

First: I am NOT working for eInk, Onyx, Sony or anybody else in the eInk / eReader industry. I am a specialist for system integration and play the classical guitar intensively, which is why these devices are so interesting for me.

I am in the same situation. Thousands of files with sheet music for the classical guitar and I want to get rid of the paper on my music stand.

I had ordered a Sony RP1 (the new model with higher resolution). Then I found the Onyx Max Carta and cancelled my order because of the following reasons:

The Sony DPT-RP1

- does NOT support Linux to send files onto the device
The Onyx does not have such a restriction. All ports on the Onyx are open for anything.

- has a pen with a battery and USB - you MUST load it, otherwise it will not work

The Onyx pen does NOT have a battery and still has very good functionality like a button to switch into instant note taking mode and turn it around and use it as a rubber to delete annotations.

- uses a display with SAME resolution as the Onyx Max Carta - it is actually the same patented device / technology from eInk, which has patents on all eInk displays

- does NOT support a browser or any other access to Internet as the older S1 Sony model did

- does NOT support WIFI to copy files to the device - only with a Windows or Apple program running on another computer you can use WIFI, otherwise WIFI on the Sony is USELESS, same for Bluetooth and NFC

- has NO way to search for or sort files directly on the device.
You MUST do this on another computer using a Windows or Apple app
Really, if you forget where a file is on the Sony, you can throw the device away.
On the Onyx, you have Android and you can use any File manager app.

- has NO way to rename folders directly on the device.

- does NOT support foot pedals but Onys supports many of them

- does NOT support to copy new docs onto the device using your smartphone

- does NOT support Android apps like the Onyx does (e.g. MobileSheetsPro)

- does NOT support SD cards to extend memory

- does NOT have a standard USB port (it has a USB port but you cannot connect USB devices - it is just for a cable to connecct with the Windows or Apple PC)

- does not support other UI languages than English and Japanese

Really, the Sony device is UNUSABLE. The only advantage is better security.

Sony should build chairs - they do not care about usefulness and functionality at all - only the design counts for them. And the Sony is NOT cheaper than the Onyx - it is the other way around. I have ordered the Onyx from eBay sent from France in 5 days for 560 EUR. The Sony comes from USA and costs 830 EUR incl tax if you order it in Germany.

I don't care at all about the old Android 4.4 on the Onyx Boox Max Carta and the security implications. I will create a backup of my sheet music on another device and viruses have NEVER been an issue for me on Android.
