Welcome to the MobileRead IRC Chat

It's been a long time coming, but we've finally replaced our woefully inadequate "shoutbox" with a more sophisticated chat system - for all those of you who need the extra daily dose of MobileRead beside visiting the forums.

It's IRC!

For the old-school enthusiasts among you, you'll be pleased to hear that the chat is based on the IRC (Internet Relay Chat) protocol. This means you can use any of your favorite IRC clients to join our private network.

Web Chat

Most non-technical users will prefer to use a web-based chat widget. Fortunately, we have one for you integrated into the MobileRead forums. To start, simply follow this link.

The first time you visit, your username will be automatically registered for the chat. Then, click on connect, which will transfer you to our #mobileread main chat channel.

Needless to say, if you run into any issue, feel free to post it here and we'll take a look at it.

Tutorial / Guide

We have created a guide in the Wiki on how to use the chat. It also contains more information if you are interested in learning about IRC. The guide is still incomplete and will receive meticulous attention in the next few days.

Server Details

If you want to continue with your own IRC client, below you find our server details. Before you start, you must visit this link to register your IRC nickname and to view your login credentials. You need these to "claim" your chat nickname.
  • Server: irc.mr.gd
  • Ports: 6665-6669, and 7000
  • Secure Ports (SSL): 6697 and 9999
  • Main Channel: #mobileread
  • SASL authentication supported
  • Host cloaking: To protect your privacy, your IP address or hostname will be completely hidden behind a pretty mobileread.com address.
