No one "fiddled with" my laptop. What they did do is install a standard image on it.
Anyway if you look
here you'll see that all versions of Windows 10 come with .net 3.5 (the version ADE wanted) "not installed by default". However it could have been enabled in the OEM image installed by the PC manufacturer, which would explain why it works out of the box for you guys.
