The GA Henty historical novels are available for free download in several formats here at MR, Lee (thanks to the generous and painstaking Crutledge). The historical detail is tremendously accurate but doesn't obviously intrude on the ripping yarns themselves. And most feature young people and elements of romance. They might suit.
