You might like the Hamish MacBeth series by M. C. Beaton, and the Amelia Peabody Series by Elizabeth Peters. I think these are classified as "cozy" mysteries. I read them as audio books because I enjoyed hearing the accents. I also think Agatha Christie (although I haven't read very many yet) would work for your purposes as well.
