I would like to nominate Frostbite: A Werewolf Tale, by David Wellington. It is an excellent book and one of the best werewolf stories that I have ever read. It does an excellent job of mixing suspense and knee jerk reaction surprise to create a a tense atmosphere.

Some folks may know David Wellington from his vampire series or his zombie books. Frostbite has a similar sort of feel to it without being a regurgitation of his other plots. I think that it would be the perfect book to read in October.
