Iain Pears' An Instance of the Fingerpost is, I believe also a work of fiction.
Two of my favourite books not on the list are:
The Ascent of Man, Jacob Bronowski, and
The Last Place on Earth, Roland Huntford. (The race to the south Pole between Scott and Amundsen.)
But... what a great list. Many thanks for the compilation. (Should keep me going till the end of the year.
