There are many silly things that came up in the early days of comics. Often, its because they didn't think they'd have to live with it for decades.

Going back to Elongated Man, his ability to stretch came from the juice of the gingold plant. He asked many circus rubber men how they were able to stretch but he wasn't able to get an answer. Eventually, he noticed that they all drank a soda pop with the juice of gingold as an ingredient (they just happened to like the taste). When he drank the juice, he suddenly found himself able to stretch. Not the most silly origin, but not the most epic one either. Later, they modified it where Elongated Man has a metagene that interacts with gingold juice to give him stretching powers.

In some cases the character goes through a period of refinement before becoming the character that we know. Superman is an example of this.

In the early days, he basically was a very strong man with tougher than average skin. Many of the things we now associate with Superman didn't come from the comics themselves but from other sources (radio, cartoons, and television), or came about because it was practical. An example of this is X-Ray vision: it eliminated the need for Superman to smash through walls to see what is going on.

On the Marvel side, gamma radiation (which in the real world only has one real effect: to kill you) has been refined to basically manifest the inner you. The Hulk is a manifestation of Bruce Banner's inner rage, while She-Hulk is a free spirit and very happy with being She-Hulk (when she was given the good news/bad news about losing the ability to revert to her normal form, she asked "What's the bad news?").
