Amazon has not locked down the Kindle Fire's (unlike what B&N has done to the Nooks) so you can sideload other reading apps (there are even a few in the Amazon Appstore so you don't
have to siodeload) to read ePub's.
That said I'd go for a Nexus if you can find one in your price range.
