Try that, and as a LiveCD or a for-real install (say, on a usb stick - many LiveCDs will do that for you).
Why?
Because it responds a lot faster to USB changes and allows the user access at a lower level.
Why not a VM?
That just adds another layer of delay.
We only have a few seconds to push a file onto the Kindle, it will probably have to be done in expect/send loop.
Or maybe even in a custom u-dev rule.
