How about James White Sector General series? Every book of that series is involved in first contact. It's about a hospital in space and all the issues around having to rescue and help beings you have no idea on how to help. I found the series very interesting, and engrossing. Written so good that it pulled me in every time I read one of the books in the series. No gory bits, just good writing.
