We use fossil fuels right now because they are cheaper and easier to use than most alternatives-- plus we already have a huge infrastructure built around them. But when they start to run out (and it'll be centuries before coal runs out, if we resort to that) there are many more options for producing usable energy than muscle power.

There is a difference between logical and logically consistent within the universe created by the author.
For instance, you can't have a fairy God mother in a police procedural unless you set up the universe of your book to allow for fairy God mothers. Tossing one in there to solve a plot problem is cheating and logically inconsistent. (And drives me up the freakin' wall!)
And so far, the author has remained logically consistent to the universe he has created.
