This novel was serialized after its original novel publication in the Boston Sunday Globe Magazine in 1920.

The story centers around an artist called to a small village to paint a commission. While there, he meets an interesting cast of characters as well as becomes a witness in a murder investigation. The story stars a pair of Scotland Yard investigators called in to solve the puzzling case.
