Tey, Josephine: The Franchise Affair, v.1, 21 July 2008.

Josephine Tey [Elizabeth MacKintosh] (1896–1952)
The Franchise Affair (1948).

A young girl claims to have been kidnapped and forced to work as a domestic servant in an isolated house belonging to two women. Can this story be true? (It may have been inspired by the 18th century true-life story of Elizabeth Canning, who also claimed to have been abducted in order to explain an absence from home.)

A classic detective story.
