Wikipedia says that the cutting room floor has an alternate ending where Clarence visits Old Man Potter, who has no friends, and gives him a hard time about the stolen eight thousand bucks and the old bloke dies of a heart attack.
That sounds like a fitting end for the old bastard. But the movie wouldn't have had the "feel good" ending about it.
