There are two approaches around that:
1. Rewrite all the closed source parts (which right now is nearly impossible)
2. Make the community developed OS a patch over the irex supplied OS.
I think that (2) is quite doable. With the sufficient care (using a static binary that does the changes to the filesystem), one should be able to even change the libc.
Either way, having the restore utility is a great step in the right direction. Now I'll have to buy a CF card or I'll be out of the game
