I think the colours plus the ability to collapse/uncollapse each patch have been one of yaml's main selling points for me.

It is much easier to modify yaml files with Notepad++! (visually speaking). I use Notepad2, that has colour styles for many programming file types, but not for yaml, where all the text is plain black
I will give Notepad++ a try for this.
