As a very happy Kindle owner, I respectfully disagree with your comment. They did their homework, and came up with a near perfect design. I would really like to know why you would think they should not be in the hardware business. Regardless of what you think of the product, its obviously a succcess.
And yes, there is room enough for many different kinds of readers, each geared to a different need for different people.
