I'd say hardware failure, not firmware. Normally something like that would be a broken substrate, but since that's a dead straight line top to bottom likely a display controller issue or loose wire. Since you can't use it the way it is it might be worth trying to carefully remove the back and see if there are any loose connections. If not, it's likely a controller issue.
