If you're already published and have a following, self-publishing your backlist (especially electronically) will absolutely make you more money. It's a no-brainer. You may not sell as many copies of each book as you might in mainstream publication, but you make so much more that it more than outweighs it.

The catch is this only works if people are already looking for your books.

First novels by new unknown writers aren't as likely to do as well, because no one knows they exist.

In other words, dumping your publisher only works if you've already got one. Not having one in the first place doesn't necessarily provide the same benefits.
