img alignment mobi conversion

I am converting an html document with math displayed as images. I've been trying to use <img ... align="middle"> to get the equations vertically centered on the line. In the mobi ebook, the images are sitting on the baseline. Calibre converts the above to css as text-align: middle. I've tried various other approaches (e.g., setting css for img as vertical-align: middle) and the images always show up on the baseline. Any suggestions on how to work around calibre's conversion so that my equations are aligned with the middle of the line?

Thanks.
