Ostrander, Isabel: At 1:30. V1, 5 July 2012

Isabel Ostrander (1883-1924) was a prolific American author of mysteries and westerns who also wrote under the names of Robert Orr Chipperfield, David Fox, and Douglas Grant. At One-Thirty was her first novel; it was influenced by E. C. Bentley's Trent's Last Case (1913) and by Ernest Bramah's stories about the blind detective Max Carrados (1914-). She wrote over 30 novels.

From the book:

. . . I found all the household collected in the den, and most of the servants crowded in the doorway. Mother had sent for the doctor; but anyone could have seen it would be of no use. Natalie, my brother's wife, was in a state of collapse, and Barbara, her sister, was attending her. Garret was leaning back, in his chair, with his face all distorted and gray, and his eyes staring, and there was a great splashing blood-stain on his shirtfront. But I'll never forget the look on his face. It was the most horrible I have ever seen. . . .
