The story of an orphaned girl who becomes a sister in a religious nursing order and, while running a ward in a large Parisian teaching hospital, grows close to a young medical student.
There are some interesting insights into the working life of medical students, and it is clear that they have an imperfect understanding of the antiseptic theories of Semmelweis and Lister.
