Because I use Google's dns servers to check whether to bother with trying to access the version.xml file on github or not. It's simply the fastest go-no-go internet connection check I've personally tested. And these days, "Google" has become a trigger word (like Amazon and Facebook) for some people who have nothing better to worry about.
