Turns out you have to go into Settings and enable download of apps from outside the Google Android Market. Funny, really, as the Google Android Market isn't even accessible on it  Apps normally download very quickly, assuming you have a reasonable Wifi connection.
Shouldn't be any different from using a laptop in these locations...
