The Art of Writing Flash Fiction

I'm currently working on a collection of Flash Fiction pieces, and thought it would be an interesting idea for those of us who love this genre to engage in some enlightened discussion on all aspects regarding working within this genre.

To start off the discussion (but feel free to wander all over the place), what do you see is involved in writing a flash fiction 'story'?

Are there certain components that you feel a short piece MUST have? Or not?
