Hint:
The system can be in one of either "exported mass storage" or "usb networking" (it isn't designed to do both at the same time over the same usb cable).
If you can connect with sshfs (or ssh or scp or telnet or ...) - then the system is in "usb networking" mode.
In which case, the usb mass storage not being visible is normal.
