I always look for rooting instructions over on the XDA forums. I don't know if you have a 1st or 2nd gen Kindle Fire but look through this forum for a start (BTW, I only root not rom my Fires):

There is also a company that has pay software ($20) that many feel is easier than manually rooting. I've never used the software but it is what a lot of nook users use.
