Final update. WHSmiths sent me a cheque a few days ago for the full purchase price of the Vox so that's a result. I was surprised that they didn't send me a replacement as they're still selling them (all be it at a much cheaper price than I paid less than a year ago) but I'm happy enough to have the cash back
