Mansfield, Katherine: Bliss and Other Stories. v1. 16 Jan 2017

Katherine Mansfield was born near Wellington, New Zealand, in 1888, the third of four surving daughters of middle class parents. Her only brother was eight years younger. In 1901 she began the first of many relationships with men and women, and made the first of several visits to England and Europe in 1903. During the later visits she became known to D.H. Lawrence, Bertrand Russell, Lytton Strachey, and Virgina Woolf. In 1918 she was diagnosed with TB, and died near Fontainbleau in France in 1923. There are longer and more detailed biographies available online through the Katherine Mansfield Society.

Bliss and Other Stories was published as a collection in 1923, and contains fourteen stories: Prelude, Je Ne Parle Pas Français, Bliss, The Wind Blows, Psychology, Pictures, The Man Without a Temperament, Mr Reginald Peacock's Day, Sun and Moon, Feuille d'Album, A Dill Pickle, the Little Governess, Revelations, and The Escape.

The source text was taken from the University of Adelaide ebook library and was checked against Collected Stories of Katherine Mansfield, first published by Constable in 1945. I have silently corrected typos, curled quotes, replaced italics, used British English, and made changes to spelling and hyphenation using oxforddictionaries.com. Letters and other documents are set out as blockquotes.
