The way you worded your post, it read as if you had connected your bench supply directly to the battery.
And 4.2 volts
IS the over-terminal capacity charge level.
Normal, that is, not including the over-charge level, is 3.7 volts.
But since you need a new battery anyway - have fun, you can not make this one any worse regardless of how you mistreat it.
