I've gathered that KU authors will only paid once the KU user has read at least 10% of the book - authors won't get paid on just downloads.
If that is so, I can only assume that the only way Amazon could get that data - not just downloads but percentage read - from their own Kindle devices and Kindle apps. If they also let people borrow epubs, they'd have no way to tell how far a reader has read on their Nook, Sony or Kobo device or app.
