Joseph R. Grismer (1849-1922), was an American, stage actor, playwright and theatrical director and producer. He was probably best remembered for his play The New South and for his revision of the Charlotte Blair Parker play, Way Down East.
Anna is a poor country girl who is tricked by rich Lennox into a fake wedding. He leaves her when she becomes pregnant and she has the baby on her own. After her baby dies and she wanders until she gets a job with Squire Bartlett. David, Squire Bartlett's son, falls for her, but she rejects him due to her past.
