Practical size limit on epubs

I'm working on an epub of a technical book with numerous figures, plates, and tables. All require images rather than text for best results because html tables have so many limitations in epubs. It looks like the epub will be perhaps 40 mb in size. I wonder if such a large file will be too slow to open and work with on a standard ereader?

Does anyone know about the practical size limits on epubs for ereaders?
