Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870)
The Forty-five Guardsmen (1847)
A sequel to ‘Chicot the Jester.’ Diane de Méridor makes various plans following the murder of her lover, Bussy D’Amboise. A band of the King’s guards also plan revenge. Meanwhile there are a number of plots at the court of the French King, Henri III and Chicot gets sent on a mission to Henri of Navarre.
This is the final novel in Dumas’s three Valois Romances. The others are ‘Marguerite de Valois’ and ‘Chicot the Jester’ (both already uploaded). The translator is anonymous. He/she seems to be different from the anonymous translator of ‘Chicot’ to judge by the style.
Approx. 152,000 words.
