Internally, the kernel sets a "wake lock" flag that prevents it from going to sleep.
The cover was shut and the Oasis seems to go into a deeper sleep than other Kindles (as per the awaking message you get when opening for the first time in a few hours), so I assumed it was "asleep" by any reasonable definition. Anyway, it worked. The last book indexed a few minutes later.
