Yeah, try a soft reset first.
With the hard reset, you lose all the content, so make sure all content is backed up before doing this option.
If this fails, just chuck the Sony junkware, re-install Calibre and just use that, and regarding DRM, perhaps a visit to Apprentice Alf's Blog will be of "interest."
