I just used the code; all I had to do was click on the "redeem a gift card" line below the gift option and enter the code there, and voila, the $2 was applied. Then I just made my purchase.
I suspect that once the credit was applied, I could have used it for any mp3, not just a $5+ album, but I don't know that for sure, as I did splurge on an expensive album.
