Temp marking was in calibre core before any plugin used it.

We added "text marks" for kiwidude & co way back when. It is true that no UI to change/set text marks existed until recently.

EDIT: out of curiosity and wanting to be correct, I went back through the change history. Kovid added text marking on 2/April/2013. He added the ability to sort on text marks for the find duplicates plugin on 29 July 2013. The UI to mark books (yes/no) was added on 5 Oct 2013.
