In Europe, for example, units are very simple. There is (not Great Britain, but this is another storry) simple always a 10^n between different units. 10, 100, 1000, ...
1 Kilogramm is 1000 Gramm, 1 Meter is 10 Dezimeter or 100 Zentimeter, ...
Have a look at the unit-conversion between inches, miles, gramm, grain, ounces, pounds, yards, gallons, ...

Well you nailed that on the head.
12 inches = 1 foot 5280 feet= 1 mile 36 inches = a yard.
8 ounces =1 cup 2 cups = a pint 2 pints= 1 quart 4 quarts= 1 gallon.
I'm not even going to get into grains, grams, teaspoons and tablespoons.
Not to mention dry cups measure different from liquid cups.
I attempted to make it less random and failed.
