The rest can be played with. Note that with Ubuntu you have four 'desktops' that you can work with. You can move applications that are running between desktops by dragging, so that you have less concern about screen real-estate.

What wubi does is creates a virtual partition containing ubuntu aUnd then creates a boot menu entry to boot to this. This is why it runs slower. Windows doesn't boot at all so you should be safe from viruses (VIRI?) As most of them require Windows to be running to work.
