I thought this charge was stopped a while back - so now if you want to buy a book for your Kindle you just click the "Amazon shop" on the Kindle itself, find the book and click buy. The price you pay will just be the price of the book and no PC is required. The device also allows you to use email and browse the web from the kindle itself. If you're going travelling then you'd definitely want a decent case for it. If you both read the same material then you can share the same account and read each others books.

If the country they're going to is supported by Kindle then I'd get a kindle otherwise I'd probably go for the Pocketbook 360 on account of it being well protected and small enough to travel about with.
